JSON Stringify Online โ Free Tool to Convert Objects and Text into JSON Strings
JSON Stringify Tool
Convert JavaScript objects into clean, formatted JSON โ instantly, in your browser.
JSON Stringify Online is a free tool that converts JavaScript objects, JSON data, and plain text into valid JSON strings in one click. Paste your input, choose a mode, and get clean output you can copy, print, or download as a .json file. Everything runs in your browser, so the data you type stays on your device.
Whether you need to escape a block of text for a JSON field, minify a payload for an API request, or pretty print a messy object so it is easy to read, this tool does it in seconds.
How to Use the JSON Stringify Tool
- Add your input. Paste text or an object into the Input box, click Load Sample to try an example, upload a
.jsonor.txtfile, or load data from a public URL. - Pick a mode. Choose Escape as String to turn any text into a quoted, escaped JSON string, or Parse & Format (object) to parse an object and re-output it as formatted JSON.
- Choose the indentation. In Parse & Format mode, select 2 spaces, 4 spaces, Tab, or Minified.
- Click Stringify. Your result appears in the Output box with line numbers.
- Copy or download. Use the Copy button, or enter a file name and click Download .json.
To go the other way, click Parse (undo). It parses the output back into a formatted object in the Input box.
Features of This JSON Stringify Online Tool
- Two modes: escape any text as a JSON string, or parse and format an object.
- Flexible indentation: 2 spaces, 4 spaces, tabs, or fully minified output.
- Parse (undo): convert a JSON string back into a readable object.
- Upload files: load
.jsonor.txtfiles up to 5 MB. - Fetch from URL: pull JSON from a public link (the remote server must allow cross-origin requests).
- Line numbers, undo and redo: work comfortably with longer inputs.
- Full screen and print: view either panel in full screen or print its content.
- One-click download: save the output as a .json file with the name you choose.
What Is JSON Stringify?
JSON stringify means converting a value, such as an object, array, or string, into a JSON-formatted text string. In JavaScript, this is done with the built-in JSON.stringify() method, which is documented on MDN Web Docs.
A JavaScript object lives in memory. A JSON string is plain text, which makes it safe to send over a network, save in a file, or store in localStorage.
const user = { name: "Jane", age: 28, active: true };
JSON.stringify(user);
// {"name":"Jane","age":28,"active":true}
JSON.stringify(user, null, 2);
// {
// "name": "Jane",
// "age": 28,
// "active": true
// }
The first call returns compact (minified) JSON. The third argument, 2, tells JavaScript to indent with two spaces. This is the same thing our Indent option does.
Escape as String vs. Parse & Format
The tool has two modes because “stringify” means different things in different situations.
| Escape as String | Parse & Format (object) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Treats your whole input as plain text and wraps it in quotes, escaping special characters | Parses your input as an object or JSON, then re-outputs it as formatted JSON |
| Best for | Putting JSON or text inside another JSON string, config values, or code strings | Formatting, minifying, and cleaning up objects |
| Indent options | Not used | 2 spaces, 4 spaces, Tab, Minified |
| Line breaks | Converted to \r\n | Controlled by the indentation setting |
Example (Escape as String):
Input:
{"name": "John"}
Output:
"{\"name\": \"John\"}"
The double quotes inside the text are escaped with backslashes, so the whole value is now a valid JSON string. This is useful when you need to embed JSON inside another JSON value or a string in your code.
Minified vs. Pretty-Printed JSON
Both formats contain exactly the same data. The only difference is whitespace.
- Minified JSON removes all spaces and line breaks. It is smaller, so it is the better choice for API requests, network transfers, and storage.
- Pretty-printed JSON adds indentation and line breaks. It is easier to read, so it is the better choice for debugging, config files, documentation, and code reviews.
Use 2 spaces for compact, readable output, 4 spaces for documentation, and Tab if your project uses tab indentation. Pick Minified when the payload is going into production.
How JSON. stringify Handles Special Values
Not every JavaScript value can be represented in JSON. Here is what happens to the most common ones:
| JavaScript value | Result in JSON |
|---|---|
undefined, functions, symbols (in an object) | The property is left out |
undefined, functions, symbols (in an array) | Converted to null |
NaN, Infinity | Converted to null |
Date object | Converted to an ISO date string |
BigInt | Throws a TypeError |
| Circular reference | Throws a TypeError |
Knowing this table saves a lot of debugging time, especially when a property “disappears” from your output.
Common JSON Stringify Errors and How to Fix Them
“Converting circular structure to JSON”
This happens when an object references itself, directly or through another object. JSON must be tree-shaped, so the serializer cannot finish. Fix it by replacing the back-reference with an ID, or by removing the property before stringifying.
“Do not know how to serialize a BigInt”
JSON has no BigInt type. Convert BigInt values to strings first, for example with a replacer function: (key, value) => typeof value === "bigint" ? value.toString() : value.
Syntax errors when stringifying
Check for missing brackets, unclosed quotes, or stray commas in your input. If your input is plain text and not an object, switch to Escape as String mode.
Output full of backslashes
That is normal. Backslashes are how JSON escapes quotes and special characters inside a string. If you want to read the original data, click Parse (undo) to decode it again.
Is This JSON Stringify Tool Private?
Yes. Stringifying, parsing, formatting, copying, and downloading all happen inside your browser, and the text you enter is not sent to our servers for processing.
There is one exception you control: if you use Fetch URL, your browser requests the address you typed directly from that website, just like opening the link in a new tab. Even then, your input is not uploaded to us.
Even so, it is good practice to avoid pasting passwords, API keys, or private customer data into any online tool.
When to Use a JSON Stringify Tool
- Preparing a request body for a REST API
- Saving an object in
localStorageorsessionStorage - Escaping JSON so it can be embedded inside another JSON string or a code string
- Minifying a large JSON file before sending it
- Formatting minified JSON from logs or API responses so it is readable
- Converting a JSON string back into a readable object

Frequently Asked Questions
What does JSON stringify mean?
It means converting a value, such as an object or array, into a JSON text string. In JavaScript, the JSON.stringify() method does this.
How do I stringify JSON online?
Paste your input into the tool, choose a mode, pick your indentation, and click Stringify. Then copy the result or download it as a .json file.
How do I convert a JSON string back to an object?
Put the string in the Output box and click Parse (undo). The tool parses it and shows the readable object in the Input box. In JavaScript, you would use JSON.parse().
What is the difference between JSON.stringify and JSON.parse?
JSON.stringify() Turns an object into a string. JSON.parse() Turns a JSON string back into an object. They are inverse operations.
How do I minify JSON?
Switch to Parse & Format (object) mode, set Indent to Minified, and click Stringify. All spaces and line breaks are removed.
Why does my output have backslashes?
When text is escaped as a JSON string, quotes and special characters get a backslash in front of them. This is required for the string to be valid JSON.
Is there a file size limit?
You can upload files up to 5 MB. Very large inputs may feel slow because the processing happens in your browser.
Is JSON Stringify Online free?
Yes, the tool is completely free, with no sign-up needed.
